what's your name? any funny stories related to it?
Everett Scott Loyel. It’s not the most common name, but there’s really nothing crazy about how I got it. My parent’s liked the name. I never really got teased of it in elementary school, which was a good thing. Yeah, there was a kid or two who was always like “what kind of name is Everett?” But I love it now! I’ve never met another kid with my name, and I know when people want to talk to me and not someone else. Most call me Everett, close friends call me Ev, but no one calls me Evie. It’s too close to my sister’s name.
how old are you? when's your birthday?
I’m sixteen. I turn a new age at the end of every school year, on May 29, and I just got my licenses like, two months ago! So I can drive, legally, now, but it’s not like I ever do. Only when me and some other go down to Jersey would I ever actually have to drive, I mean, look where I live!
what do you like to do? what are your interests?
I love cars. I go to shows, and I wish I had a Road Runner. That’s my favourite, by far. They’re just amazing, and fast, and exciting, and different. I enjoy playing sports too. Soccer and Tennis are my forte, you could say. It’s a great time. Oh yeah, I love to babysit. True story. I kind of have to sometimes with my family, but I love it. Not babies, but toddlers. They’re the greatest once they’ve been potty trained. I think kids are hilarious. And so are pranks! I guess I’m a bit of an anklebiter myself, maturity wise. Am I the class clown? Eh, maybe at times. I’m never serious though, I know that. I just love to goof off. And food? That’s delicious. I live off of Milo. I drink a glass every morning, but it’s expensive. My aunt orders a box of like 10 cans every couple of months. I absolutely love French fries with mayonnaise though. It’s delicious, so give it a try. And cold weather. I like to be in the cold, which is why New York is probably my favorite city outside of home. I love to surf too, but you really can’t do that much here, so then I took up skating when I came to America. I could do that for hours. Oh! I’m going to go finish watching Frankenstein after this! That’s my favorite movie! The one with Robert DeNiro[because he’s awesome] and Helena Bohnam Carter[because she’s hot].
what do you dislike doing? what things don't you like?
I hate cleaning, and I hate it when my aunt won’t let me drive my car. I bought it with my own money, so it’s my right, right? I also hate meat. Read meat, and poultry anyway. I could live off of seafood. I’m not vegetarian. Oh yeah, there’s also football. My brother plays. He also plays hockey on a community team. I hate having to go watch the games. They’re so boring. My mum is satan’s temptress in human form. I can’t stand her for leaving Melbourne and my dad. She’s a slut too, but don’t talk about her. Card games annoy me. They’re dumb. And I can’t stand science classes. People who can’t take jokes need to just run away and live in Hawaii or some other obscenely small island chain. They’re dumb too. Life is fun, so enjoy it. I also absolutely hate balloons. No reason, they’re just weird. They feel weird and are just…odd. I don’t get them.
do you have any secrets? we promise we won't tell.
Well, ok, I know I can often seem lighthearted and carefree, but really, I’ve been a little..I don’t know the word. I feel kind of guilty about the shooting. I mean, I didn’t know about it beforehand, and I didn’t even talk to the kid more than twice, but still. Remember Derrick Westwood? Freshman boy that got shot? Well we never did get along very well. I mean, we nearly hated each other, and he was probably the only kid who I ever could say was an enemy. We even had mutual friends but we just could not get along! So like a week before the shooting I said something along the lines of “he could die, and I wouldn’t care.” And then…yeah. I know it wasn’t my fault, but Should not have said that. I feel horrible.
what are you afraid of?
I’m afraid of the dark. True story. Still sleep with a light on. Yeah, I’m a bit of a baby about it, but I just never grew out of that phase, I guess.
how's the love life?
So I’m single. I had a girlfriend all through freshman year, but I was sort of a douche after the shooting, and we broke up. I’m still in love with her, but I don’t think I deserve anyone right now. I’m a huge flirt though. With any girl, and that probably made her jealous sometimes. I’m just the kind of guy who wants a girlfriend, but can’t actually keep one and have us both be happy. It’s complicated.
where are you from? where is your hometown?
Melbourne, Australia. I moved here to New York when I was twelve with my mum and all my siblings I had then. I grew up there my whole life until I moved here, and I haven’t lived in any other city. So you can’t really say I’ve travelled a lot, just one long distance.
describe your personality. what makes you, you?
I’m not the class clown. A lot of people see me as a goof off though. I don’t take school seriously in the classroom, ever [unless it’s history]. So I like to joke around and cheer people up. I’m highly sarcastic, and I flirt a lot. I guess I’m a pleaser? Is that the technical term? I like to be the reason others are happy, and I’ll do whatever that takes to get them that way. I’ve been used by “friends” quite a few times, and maybe that makes me easy to take advantage of? I don’t know…maybe I am.
I make friends easily. Most of the time, if you take away that one exception, but I definitely don’t attach myself to others. I could seriously be best friends with you one day, soulmates the next, and then move on and not speak to you again until you need something months later. I’m quite flighty, which adds salt to my wound of procrastination. I always push things off to the end. I hardly ever complete my goals, and I’m that kid sitting in the library during second bell printing off his paper due in fifteen minutes. I’m probably not the best person to be serious with.
People don’t come to me for their problems. I mean some do. I’m a but of an apathetic guy though. Yes, I want them to be happy, but I don’t console them. I don’t go “aww, it’ll be ok,” and embrace them. I make jokes, and point out how the situation could be worse. People don’t tend to always trust me with secrets of confide in me a lot, but if they wanted to, I would try to be mature and solve their problems. I may just take personal pleasure in their problems first.
what is your family like? who are you closest with?
Huge. It wasn’t planned that way either. My mum and dad had my brother Elias when they were just 16 and 18, then they had me two years later. My sister Bakely was born a year after me, and then two years after here they had Gretchen. This was all while living in Australia. Then, my mum gave birth to my next sister, Evangline [Evey] when I was about 11, and she was half Filipino. My parents were both white, so then my dad left, and my mum was alone with four kids and an infant. They never actually got divorced, but my mum left to go back to America with her family and took all of us. My dad didn’t even fight for us! I used to adore him.
So then, since they didn’t get a divorce, mum never bothered remarrying. She slept around a lot. I didn’t realize it then, but after a year or two it clicked. When I was 14 she had twins, who were both black, and named them Michael and Samuel. And just recently she had Cash, who is the only one who looks anything like us first three. Of course, she could never raise all of us on her own, so we actually moved in with my aunt Vicki when we came to New York. Which is why we’re here and not in Pennsylvania with my grandparents. I love my aunt. My dad was an ass for not caring about us, my mum is a whore, but my aunt is amazing. Elias and Bakely don’t like her much, but I can make up for them.

It had been a long day, moving things between Effy’s place and Everett’s. Luckily, Bakely had stuck around to help, distracting Holly whenever she needed to be and the others were just too busy to really stop and tend to the child. During the last round of boxes though, the siblings were back in the extra room that had previously been used for storage, attempting to clear it out. Most of the stuff was moved into Everett’s room, which already wasn’t the cleanest, and the clutter didn’t help. Some of it was too precious to be lost in the mess across the hall, like his guitar that he hadn’t touched in years. Other than that, the room had been mostly cleared out. Bakely had brought over some clean sheets and an old dresser they didn’t use back home for them, which her and Everett fought with bringing in for hours before they even went over to get Effy and Holly.
During the entire time of cleaning out space for the girls, Bakely made no attempt to mask her dislike in Everett’s sloppiness. He had clothes strewn everywhere, old dishes around the place, and skateboards and their accessories just lying about. It probably wasn’t the safest place for a two year old, but his sister had managed to speed clean part of the place before they had to start filling up the apartment. There were only a few boxes left to bring in, so Everett and Bakely stayed back in his room, separating some of his belongings into a pile of what he was willing to send home with Bake for a while until he had room again. She was busy trying to put away the things he was keeping. It wasn’t long before they were each carrying out a large box to the car of things Everett wouldn’t probably see for a while. Most of it was his skating stuff that he didn’t really need at the moment. It was hard to part, he felt slightly heartbroken by it, but he couldn’t deny it when Bakely pointed out that he really didn’t need seven extra boards and sixty something wheels.
He only caught a glimpse of Effy heading into the kitchen before he was out the door, and Everett didn’t really think about mentioning he didn’t cook a lot. He could; Vicki made sure they could all cook before they ever moved out, but he lived off of sandwiches and take out mostly. He never much worried about what there was to eat, and he hoped they were terribly hungry. The fridge was probably close to empty aside form a bag of tomatoes. He always had tomatoes. There was a thought though that with Effy living with him, there would probably be more home cooking than he was used to. Not that he’d argue. Food was food. He just loved to eat.
It was getting late though, and had been an unreasonably long day. Everett had to ask off from work, both jobs in case he didn’t make it to his second, but he enjoyed being able to spend it with Holly and Effy and catching up with his eldest younger sister. Bakely had to leave though, not wanting to get home too late. Vicki was working today, which meant she had just left Mika and Elias alone with 5 kids for an entire day. She loved the thought of the break she got though. Everett said his goodbyes and went back up to the apartment, walking in to see Holly sitting on the couch engrossed by the television. ”You’re brain will stop working if you watch too much TV,” he teased the little girl, ”Us ninjas have to stay smart. We have missions to complete!” She just gave him a small squeal and a smile before turning back to the set and losing interest in him. Everett had to hold back a laugh. He never remembered watching that much television when he was little.
You know, this place is a mess. Good thing you have a cleaning fairy around now.” Effy’s voice spoke up from behind them. Everett smiled, despite all the moving, he felt like he actually hadn’t seen her all day and telted his head back to try and look he in the eyes, ”It’s not messy,” he pouted, ”It’s homey.” That was the same answer he gave Bakely earlier in the day before she started to clean. He closed his hand over hers when she started to tussle his hair and gave Effy a quick frown, ”Try not to touch me too much. Benji might get jealous,” he smirked to let her know he was joking before pulling his hand away from hers to keep to himself.
